The Quran is clear in that we are supposed to unite as an ummah, and there should be no sects.
And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah’s favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided.
Here, Allah swt commands all Muslims to unite and hold together the rope of Allah, which I presume to mean the Quran. Allah joined us all together through this message and we are not be differ from it.
Allah swt further states,
The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy.
Here Allah swt is clear that we are one brotherhood, and we are to make peace and reconciliation with each other.
Allah swt further states,
And obey Allah and His Messenger; and fall into no disputes, lest ye lose heart and your power depart; and be patient and persevering: For Allah is with those who patiently persevere:
8:46 – وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَلَا تَنَـٰزَعُوا۟ فَتَفْشَلُوا۟ وَتَذْهَبَ رِيحُكُمْ ۖ وَٱصْبِرُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ
Allah commands us to not fall into disputes or wars with each other.
Now, some Shias may state, well we are being hunted down by “sunnis”. This view is a warped view of history. However, even if that version of history is true, then we are still supposed to hold onto the commandments of Allah swt. Now some shias may say, well we are also supposed to hold onto the commandments of the Imams. To that I will agree. The Imams themselves are consistent with the message of the Quran on this matter (and all matters). Imam Ali as, states in his Will 47, in Nahjul Balagha the following to his sons Hassan as and Hussein as:
I advise you (both) to fear Allah and that you should not hanker after the (pleasures of this) world even though it may run after you. Do not be sorry for anything of this world that you have been denied. Speak the truth and act (in expectation) for reward. Be an enemy of the oppressor and helper of the oppressed.
I advise you (both) and all my children and members of my family and everyone whom my writing reaches, to fear Allah, to keep your affairs in order, and to maintain good relations among yourselves for I have heard your grand-father (the Holy Prophet – p.b.u.h.a.h.p.) saying, “Improvement of mutual differences is better than general prayers and fastings.”
(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of orphans. So do not allow them to starve and they should not be ruined in your presence.
(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of your neighbors, because they were the subject of the Prophet’s advice. He went on advising in their favor till we thought he would allow them a share in inheritance.
(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of the Qur’an. No one should excel you in acting upon it. (Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of prayer, because it is the pillar of your religion.
(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of your Lord’s House (Ka’bah). Do not forsake it so long as you live, because if it is abandoned you will not be spared.
(Fear) Allah (and) keep Allah in view in the matter of jihad with the help of your property, lives and tongues in the way of Allah.
You should keep to a respect for kinship and spending for others. Avoid turning away from one another and severing mutual relations. Do not give up bidding for good and forbidding from evil lest the mischievous gain positions over you, and then if you will pray, the prayers will not be granted.
Then he said: O sons of `Abd al-Muttalib, certainly I do not wish to see you plunging harshly into the blood of Muslims shouting “Amir al-mu’minin has been killed.” Beware, do not kill on account of me except my killer.Wait till I die by his (Ibn Muljam’s) existing stroke. Then strike him one stroke for his stroke and do not dismember the limbs of the man, for I have heard the Messenger of Allah (S) saying, “Avoid cutting limbs even though it may be a rabid dog.”
Nahjul Balagha: Will 47
When we examine this language we see that Imam Ali as, ordered his sons, and anyone who is reading this, the hold fast to the orders of Allah swt. To keep good relations amongst the muslims, as this is better than fasting and praying. And to not go out on a vendetta against those who supported his killer, rather just kill the killer himself.
This is the true message of Islam. To not cause fitna, and to only punish the transgressor not those associated with him. So it is a great wonder why some Shias have taken all of the various sunni sects as enemies of ahlul bayt that they need to avenge, or they think that Imam Mahdi will come and kill.
