The Requirement of Faith in Islam

Islam, is the religion that Allah gave us. Allah swt indicates it was the same religion Abraham (as) was upon.

The Jews and Christians each say, “Follow our faith to be ˹rightly˺ guided.” Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “No! We follow the faith of Abraham, the upright—who was not a polytheist.” (2:135)

To discover what the requirement of Islam are, we must go to Allah’s message. We find Allah’s message in nowhere other than the book of Allah. There is no book of Allah that exists today, other than the Quran.

We know best what they say. And you ˹O Prophet˺ are not ˹there˺ to compel them ˹to believe˺. So remind with the Quran those who fear My warning. (50:45)

The Quran is a warning for humanity for those that fear Allah’s warning. The Quran is also a guidance for us to believe and follow:

This ˹Quran˺ is ˹true˺ guidance. And those who disbelieve in their Lord’s verses will suffer the ˹worst˺ torment of agonizing pain. (45:11)

The Quran requires for us to believe in certain things to reach guidance and to be considered a muslim. These are:

Righteousness is not in turning your faces towards the east or the west. Rather, the righteous are those who believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Books, and the prophets; who give charity out of their cherished wealth to relatives, orphans, the poor, ˹needy˺ travellers, beggars, and for freeing captives; who establish prayer, pay alms-tax, and keep the pledges they make; and who are patient in times of suffering, adversity, and in ˹the heat of˺ battle. It is they who are true ˹in faith˺, and it is they who are mindful ˹of Allah˺. (2:177)

There are five requirements of faith for a muslim, and a righteous muslim, believe in (1) Allah, (2) The Last Day, (3) The angels, (4) The scriptures, (5) the prophets.

Further, this verse gives further actions requirement to be considered a pious and righteous muslim. Those are (1) give money to relatives, orphans, the poor, travellers, beggars, and for freeing captives, (2) who establish prayer, (3) pay zakat, (4) those who fulfill their pledges, (5) who are patient in tough times, suffering, and in heat of battle. These people have true faith and are mindful of Allah.

The requirements of faith are above, and the requirements of actions are above as well. If anyone is to be judged, they are to be judged upon this standard. We can agree that 100% of all muslims today agree upon these items. Further, if someone fulfills these items, and you attack them, you are now attacking a potential friend of Allah.
